Google Ads for car locksmiths is all about winning the urgent call. Here is how a London car locksmith got 948 leads at £34.10 each.
The Client
A mobile car locksmith covering London, UK. Services include car lockouts, lost keys, key programming and replacement fobs.
The Challenge
- Urgent searches: If the call isn’t answered, the customer rings the next ad.
- Call centres and resellers: National lead sellers bid on the same terms and drive up costs.
- Low-value searches: “Key fob battery” and “how to unlock car” look relevant but rarely become paid jobs.
- Fake and spam calls: These were being counted as conversions and confusing the bidding.
What I Did
Made calling the easiest thing on screen: Emergency searches like “locked keys in car” and “lost car keys” ran in their own campaign, with call assets, call-focused ads and the highest bids.
Kept planned work separate: Key programming and spare keys ran in a second campaign with lower bids and weekday scheduling.
Matched ads to availability: Emergency ads ran hardest in the evenings and at weekends, when lockouts peak, and only during hours the locksmith could take jobs.
Targeted by response time: Location targeting followed how quickly the locksmith could reach a customer, with lower bids at the edges.
Stood out from call centres: Ads said “local locksmith, not a call centre”, showed a real arrival time and an upfront call-out price.
Counted only real calls: Only answered calls over 60 seconds were counted. Spam numbers were blocked.
The Results
| Metric | Result |
|---|---|
| Ad spend managed | £32.3K |
| Conversions (leads) | 948 |
| Cost per lead | £34.10 |
| Conversion rate | 16.08% |
| Clicks | about 5,900 |
With a typical lockout or key job worth well above £34, every lead had plenty of margin built in.
What the Numbers Show
About 5,900 clicks produced 948 leads, at an average of roughly £5.48 per click and a 16.08% conversion rate. That kept the cost per lead at £34.10.
For a car locksmith, a single lockout, lost key or key programming job usually pays far more than £34. That gives every lead a healthy margin, even before counting repeat customers and referrals.
The key was counting only real conversions. Short calls, spam and wrong numbers were filtered out, so bidding learned from genuine jobs. Google covers the setup in its guide to conversion measurement, and for call-based businesses it makes a huge difference.
If you run Google Ads for car locksmiths, separate urgent and planned work, only run emergency ads when you can answer the phone, and make calling you the easiest thing on the screen.
Is This Approach Right for Your Locksmith Business?
This setup suits mobile locksmiths who take both urgent lockout calls and planned key work. If you work alone, the availability-based schedule matters even more, because every missed call is money spent for nothing.
If you already run ads, compare your call log with your ad schedule. Calls that come in when nobody can answer are one of the most common and expensive leaks in locksmith accounts. Fixing that alone often lowers the cost per job within a few weeks, and it costs nothing to check.
The foundation of profitable Google Ads for car locksmiths stays the same: separate urgent and planned work, make calling easy, stand out from call centres and count only answered calls.
