Google Ads for auto repair shops works best when ads match what drivers actually search for. Here is how a Florida repair shop got 5,080 leads at $37.90 each.

The Client

An auto repair shop in FL, USA, offering diagnostics, brakes, AC repair, transmission work and general maintenance. Total ad spend was $193K.

The Challenge

  • DIY traffic: Plenty of people searching car problems just want to fix it themselves.
  • Parts shoppers: Searches like “brake pads near me” sent clicks that ended up at AutoZone, not the shop.
  • Cheap jobs eating the budget: Oil changes and high-ticket repairs shared one budget, so low-value clicks won.
  • Volume mattered: The shop needed a steady flow of cars to keep every bay busy.

What I Did

Built ads around symptoms: Ad groups matched what drivers type: “AC blowing warm air”, “car won’t start clicking noise”, “grinding noise when braking”. Each one led to a page that named the problem and offered a diagnostic booking.

Gave high-value services their own budget: Brakes, transmission, AC and diagnostics each had a campaign weighted by average invoice. Oil changes ran on a small, capped budget.

Blocked DIY and parts searches: Negatives for “parts”, “how to replace”, “YouTube”, “diagram”, “OEM”, “AutoZone” and “O’Reilly” kept the spend on real customers.

Tracked real leads only: Calls over a minimum length and online booking requests counted as conversions. Short and spam calls didn’t.

The Results

Metric Result
Ad spend managed $193K
Conversions (leads) 5,080
Cost per lead $37.90
Conversion rate 21.32%
Clicks about 23,800

A 21% conversion rate means roughly one lead for every five clicks. For a local repair shop, that kept the bays full.

What the Numbers Show

Over about 23,800 clicks, the account averaged roughly $8.10 per click and turned 21.32% of those clicks into leads. That conversion rate is what kept the cost per lead at $37.90.

For a repair shop, a single brake job, AC repair or transmission fix can be worth several hundred dollars. At under $40 per lead, the shop only needed a small share of leads to become paying jobs for the ads to be clearly profitable.

None of this works without accurate tracking. Every call and booking request was measured, so the shop knew exactly which campaigns produced customers. Google explains the basics in its guide to conversion measurement, and it is the first thing I check in any account.

The lesson for Google Ads for auto repair shops is simple: match the ad to the problem the driver is searching for, track the calls properly, and keep cheap jobs from eating the budget.

Is This Approach Right for Your Repair Shop?

This setup suits independent repair shops that offer a range of services, from quick jobs like oil changes to bigger repairs like transmissions and AC. Smaller shops can use the same structure with fewer campaigns and a tighter service area.

If you are not sure where your current account is losing money, start by checking which search terms are spending without bringing in calls. That one report usually shows where the quickest savings are, and it takes less than an hour to review.

The heart of good Google Ads for auto repair shops never changes: build ads around symptoms, protect high-value services from cheap clicks, block DIY searches and count only real calls and bookings.

Google Ads for Auto Repair Shops: Key Lessons

  • Write ads around symptoms. Drivers search for the problem, not the repair.
  • Split cheap services from expensive ones so oil changes don’t swallow the budget.
  • Block parts and DIY searches from day one.
