Google Ads for mobile detailing pays off when the van stays busy close to home. Here is how a Chicago detailer got nearly 2,000 leads at $32.14 each with a $4.73 average CPC.
The Client
A mobile auto detailing business in Chicago, USA, offering interior detailing, ceramic coating, and fleet washing at customers’ homes or offices.
The Challenge
- Bargain hunters: Detailing searches pull in people looking for a $20 car wash.
- Ads showing too far away: Google was serving ads in areas the van couldn’t reach profitably.
- Big players pushing up costs: Franchises bid hard on “car detailing near me”.
- High-value work underfunded: Ceramic coating jobs are worth far more than a basic detail, but got a tiny share of the budget.
What I Did
Targeted by drive time, not by city: I mapped the zip codes within a set drive time of base and only targeted those, with higher bids where past jobs had been most valuable.
Split ads by package: Interior, full detail, ceramic coating and fleet washing each had their own ad group, with starting prices in the ads to put off bargain hunters.
Won the long tail: Instead of fighting over the expensive head term, I went after phrases like “mobile car detailing at home”, “pet hair removal car interior” and “ceramic coating mobile service”. Cheaper clicks, readier buyers.
Blocked the wrong searches: Negatives for “car wash”, “coin wash”, “self service”, “detailing supplies” and “detailing jobs”.
Bid with the weather: Detailing demand jumps on sunny weekends and drops when it rains, so bids followed the pattern.
The Results
| Metric | Result |
|---|---|
| Ad spend managed | $63.3K |
| Cost per lead | $32.14 |
| Conversion rate | 14.60% |
| Average CPC | $4.73 |
| Leads | about 1,970 |
| Clicks | about 13,400 |
Keeping clicks under $5 while converting at nearly 15% is what brought the cost per lead down to $32.
What the Numbers Show
Across about 13,400 clicks, the average cost per click was just $4.73. With 14.60% of clicks turning into leads, the account produced roughly 1,970 leads at $32.14 each.
Low click costs came from avoiding the expensive head terms that franchises fight over. Long-tail searches like “mobile car detailing at home” cost less and attracted people ready to book, not people comparing car wash prices.
Drive-time targeting mattered just as much. A lead 45 minutes away is barely worth having for a mobile detailer, so the budget stayed in the zip codes the van could reach profitably. Every booking was tracked using Google’s conversion measurement setup, so bids followed real jobs.
For anyone running Google Ads for mobile detailing, the formula is simple: cheap, specific keywords, a tight service area and prices in the ads to keep bargain hunters away.
Is This Approach Right for Your Detailing Business?
This works well for mobile detailers who offer a mix of quick details and higher-value services like ceramic coating. Solo operators can use the same setup with a smaller budget and a tighter drive-time radius.
If your detailing ads are getting clicks but few bookings, check where those clicks are coming from. Very often, a large share of the spend goes to areas you would never drive to, and fixing that alone can lower your cost per booking quickly.
Successful Google Ads for mobile detailing always comes back to the same basics: target by drive time, show your prices, win the long-tail searches and track real bookings.
